Why it matters
Trust compounds from evidence, and talk is cheap. Anyone can post a quote. Almost nobody actually builds. So when you build in public, you instantly separate yourself from the crowd of people who only talk. Your process becomes proof, and proof is the moat nobody can copy.
Building in public does three things at once: it turns your work into content (so you stop staring at a blank page wondering what to post), it makes you accountable (a watching audience is a gentle deadline), and it accelerates your skill through reps and feedback. The people who follow your build become invested in your outcome. They're not an audience anymore. They're a crew.
How to do it
- 1Pick one thing you're actually making: a project, a skill, a product. Just one. Then document it out loud.
- 2Share the process, not only the polished result. Drafts, dead ends, lessons, small wins. The messy middle is the most relatable part.
- 3Ship small and often. Cadence beats size. A rough thing posted today beats a perfect thing planned for someday.
- 4Make your work legible. Each time, say what it is, why it matters, and what's next. People can't root for what they don't understand.
- 5Narrate your own mistakes. Teardowns of your flops build more trust than any win, because they prove you're honest.
Where people go wrong
- Only posting highlight reels, which reads as marketing, not trust.
- Waiting for perfect, so nothing ever ships.
- Building in private then "announcing," which leaves no journey to follow.
